College Corner with the Director of College Counseling: Blog Post #2 (2017-2018)

The Decisions are Coming!

While many consider this time of year to include some of the happiest and carefree weeks on the calendar, for high school seniors it is considered some of the most stressful and nerve-wracking. The start of the holiday season in college admission signals the release of admissions decisions, and while several institutions who practice rolling admission have been releasing decisions for a few weeks by now, the vast majority of schools will be releasing their early admissions decisions in one big bulk between now and the end of January, with many being released prior to Christmas Day.

At Trinity Hall, we have a year-round practice we like to call “Don’t Ask, Will Tell.” We encourage the faculty and underclasswomen not to ask the seniors when they will hear back from a college or what a particular admission decision was, and instead wait until students feel comfortable to share their news. While nerves may never completely subside, we have found that this practice creates a sense of ease throughout the senior class, and helps them to get their minds off of college, even if it is only for one peaceful moment.

I am so proud of all that our Class of 2018 has accomplished so far, and look forward to sharing an initial list of college acceptances and scholarship awards with the community at the end of January 2018. There has already been a great deal of excitement and good news; one student was accepted into her first-choice school and has made her final decision — subsequently her locker has been decorated in her college colors.

I also want to take the time to thank the 109 colleges and universities that visited us this past fall. It was an honor and a privilege to welcome so many institutions to our campus and we wish them the best of luck with all of their college decisions. Having been on the “other side of the desk” I can attest that this time of year is just as stressful for the college admission representatives as it is for the students!
