Project #2: Garden Irrigation System

April 2023

The second annual HUMM Institute workshop began on a rainy spring day in April of 2023. Led by the inaugural HUMM Institute ambassadors, a group of 21 sophomores spent their Saturday being immersed into business-entrepreneurial problem-solving.

After a foundational lesson on the partnership between business, entrepreneurship and design, students were split up into groups and given the specifications on their project. The students were tasked with coming up with an irrigation system for the school's garden. The garden, which is maintained by the Garden Gurus, needed a system to ensure consistent and sufficient watering for all of the plants and flowers.

After hearing from Alexa Alverio about her career and water supply engineering, the groups started off by surveying the opportunity area of the back lawn and the garden, even in the rain! The groups then pitched their designs to the inaugural HUMM ambassadors and the head of school in a Shark Tank-style panel of judges. After their presentations, the judges conferred and picked a winning design that the cohort will carry out.
